There’s nothing sweeter than knowing God is speaking to you. You feel safe. You feel guided. But let’s be honest — many of us are confused when it comes to hearing His voice. We’ve heard people say, “God told me…” and we wonder, “How?” Did they hear a loud voice? Was it a dream? Did a light flash in the sky?
Hearing the voice of God isn’t about drama or mystery. It’s relationship. Just like a baby starts to recognize their mother’s voice with time, we also begin to recognize God’s voice when we stay close to Him.
Let me show you five practical steps that help. We don’t have to overthink it. We just need to position our hearts and walk with God like He’s real — because He is.
1. Have a Ready Heart
God is always speaking, but not every heart is ready to hear. Sometimes our hearts are too noisy, too distracted, or even too proud. If you want to hear God, the first thing to do is quiet your heart and make it ready.
Ezekiel 14:3 says,
“Son of man, these men have set up their idols in their hearts and put before them that which causes them to stumble into iniquity. Should I let Myself be inquired of at all by them?”
God was basically saying, “You want to hear Me, but your heart is full of other things.”
A ready heart is a clean heart. A willing heart. A humble heart. It’s the kind of heart that says, “Lord, I’m not here to argue. I’m here to obey.”
When you remove bitterness, pride, fear, and sin from your heart, you make space for God’s voice to land.
2. Pray the Prayer of Inquiry
Sometimes we tell God what we want, and we don’t wait to ask what He wants. But the prayer of inquiry is different. You ask specific questions, and then you wait for Him to speak.
In 1 Samuel 30:8, David faced a painful moment. The Amalekites had attacked his city, taken their wives and children, and burned everything. But instead of rushing into battle, David paused.
“So David inquired of the LORD, saying, ‘Shall I pursue this troop? Shall I overtake them?’ And He answered him, ‘Pursue, for you shall surely overtake them and without fail recover all.’”
That’s the power of inquiry. David didn’t assume. He asked. And God answered.
You can do the same.
Ask, “Lord, should I take this job?”
“Lord, should I say yes to this relationship?”
“Lord, is this the right step for me?”
Be specific in your questions. Then be quiet enough to hear what He says.
3. Spend Time in Worship, Bible Study, and Meditation
God’s voice is not always a sound. Sometimes it’s a scripture that jumps out at you. Sometimes it’s peace that refuses to leave your heart. And sometimes, it’s a quiet whisper in your spirit.
The more time you spend with God in worship, Bible study, and meditation, the clearer His voice becomes.
Psalm 119:105 says,
“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”
If you’re walking in darkness, His Word will bring light. But you have to open it. You can’t expect direction if your Bible is always closed.
Also, worship opens your spirit. In 2 Kings 3:15, when Elisha was about to prophesy, he said:
“Now bring me a musician.” Then it happened, when the musician played, that the hand of the LORD came upon him.
Worship softens the heart and prepares the atmosphere. And meditation helps you stay still long enough to hear what God is saying. So, don’t rush out of God’s presence. Linger. Let Him speak.
4. Take Action When Required
Sometimes we don’t hear more from God because we didn’t obey the last thing He said.
If God nudges you to apologize, do it.
If He tells you to let something go, don’t drag it.
If He says “wait,” don’t force your way forward.
James 1:22 says,
“But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.”
We deceive ourselves when we say, “I’m waiting on God to speak,” while ignoring the clear instructions He already gave.
Remember the story of Abraham in Genesis 22? God told him to go and sacrifice Isaac. Abraham obeyed. And while he was about to do it, God spoke again and stopped him. If Abraham didn’t move, he wouldn’t have heard the next instruction.
Obedience keeps the conversation going.
